A Hidden Gem Hike:
Rifugio Fonda-Savio
Another breathtaking hike in the dolomites and another view of the Tre Cime, which you have not seen on Instagram, yet. Sounds great?
It will get even better! There is another “gem” hidden on this hike. Read below, what to expect when hiking up to the Fontasavio Hut.
Suggested for: Hikers with a good basic endurance
Start Point: Parking lot between Lago di Misurina and Lago d’Antorno, at Auronzo do Cadore
End Point: Parking lot between Lago di Misurina and Lago d’Antorno, at Auronzo do Cadore
Altitude difference: 500 meters up and down
Distance: 7 km
Duration: 3,5 hours
The hike is located in one of the most stunning areas within the dolomites. You will have stunning views of the “Gruppo del Cristallo”, the “Gruppo dei Cadini di Misurina” and the “Dolomiti di Sesto” including the famous “Tre Cime di Lavaredo”.
The hike starts on a well-developed agricultural road, which leads through a pine forest. After some hundred meters it starts to constantly gain altitude – but in a gently way, so that it can be hiked easily, if you have basic condition. Every step is worth it, as the views around extend with every step you take.
Keep your eyes open – not just for the view of the sorounding peaks, but also for the small things around you. When hiking in autum, you will be able to discover a colourful alpine landscape.
The last third gets a little bit more challenging as the path gets more and more covered with debris. The last few meters even get a bit adventurous as you have to climb a wodden ladder, which is build on the rocks beneath.
When arriving at the hut, you should take a short detour to the small elevation behind the hut. Here you will find the view point, which allows you to see the famous “Tre Cime di Lavaredo”.
Also the view of the hut itself is worth a picture. It is build right to mountainside and it appears surreal, that it is possible to build a hut in such a rough landscape.
Now you might be questioning yourself what’s the “gem”, which I was referring to at the beginning of this post?
It is the hut itself! And no, I do not mean the location – but the people running the hut and the food and drinks, which are served here. The atmosphere in this family-owned hut is absolutely welcoming and really heartwarming. Get yourself a place close to the oven and order a hot chocolate (the best one!!) and a cheese dumpling (a must!). The hut closes at the end of September and reopens in June. You can also stay overnight and do different climbs right at the location of the hut. An absolute jewel of the alpine huts and a must visit.
