Why you should visit the ruins of Ek Balam

When traveling across the Yucatan Peninsula, many visitors have Chichen Itza on their must-see list. Chichen Itza has rightfully earned its place as a top attraction, being one of the new seven world wonders. However, many travelers tend to overlook the many other archaeological sites scattered throughout the region. While smaller in size, these sites are just as worthy of a visit.

Ek Balam is one of those sites, located only 30 kilometers away from Valladolid, nestled in the lush green jungle. What makes it even more special is the fact that it is easily accessible by car and still allows visitors to climb the ruins. This is not the case for many other ruins on the Yucatan peninsula, such as Chichen Itza, Uxmal, or Coba. Arriving early may grant you the chance to have the ruins all to yourself. Listen to the soothing sounds of the surrounding jungle as you climb “The Acropolis,” and you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view over the green sea beneath your feet.

Its unique design features a rectangular shape with a triangular doorway on each side, making it stand out among other Mayan structures.

This entrance offers fantastic photo opportunities to capture the surrounding structures from different angles, so be sure to take your time and snap some shots. The entrance also serves as a gateway to the rest of the site, where you can explore other notable structures like the Acropolis, the Oval Palace, and the Ball Court.

Ball Court

Like many other Mayan sites, Ek Balam features a “football” playground. While it’s much smaller than the one at Chichén Itzá, it’s still a fascinating feature to explore. As you wander through the ruins, it’s easy to imagine the Mayans playing their ancient version of the game, trying to score goals through the small rings that adorn the walls of the court.

The Mayans took their sports seriously, and the “football” game held significant cultural and religious importance. It was played in a similar manner to modern-day soccer, with two teams attempting to score goals using only their hips and feet. The game was often used to settle disputes between rival cities or to honor the gods.

In addition to the impressive structures, Ek Balam also offers a chance to appreciate the beauty of the natural world. Keep a watchful eye out for the intricate ant trails that crisscross the ground, leading to hidden nests and sources of food. You may also spot brightly-colored hibiscus flowers, adding a pop of color to the green jungle surroundings.

As you explore the ruins, take a moment to pause and appreciate the natural wonders that surround you. The Mayans had a deep respect for the environment and the interconnectedness of all living things, and this is reflected in the design and layout of the city. By paying attention to the natural world, you can gain a deeper appreciation for the Mayan culture and their relationship with the land.

The Acropolis

The Acropolis, standing at about 30 meters, is the tallest structure in the Ek Balam archaeological area. As you approach it, you’ll notice the different areas protected by palapa roofs, open-sided dwellings with thatched roofs made of dried palm leaves.

This pyramid has multiple levels, and on each one, you’ll find chambers that were once used as tombs. The entrances to these chambers are adorned with beautiful stucco, setting it apart from other Mayan ruins that primarily feature stone-carvings. Make sure to take a closer look at the intricate details of the stucco decorations.

As you ascend to the top of the Acropolis, prepare to be astounded by the breathtaking vistas that unfold before you. The verdant greens of the jungle stretch out to the horizon, a captivating reminder of the unspoiled wilderness that surrounds this ancient site. From the summit, you can take in sweeping views of the other ruins. The sight of these ancient structures, rising majestically out of the sea of greenery, is a truly unforgettable one.

Take a moment to relish the views before beginning your descent, but brace yourself for a challenging climb down. You may find yourself with sore muscles for the next few days, but the memories of this awe-inspiring experience will stay with you forever.

But the views are worth it.
