Diving in Playa del Carmen

During my second trip to Mexico in 2022 I decided to take diving classes in order to get a diving certification. Mexico and especially the coast at the Riviera Maya have some of the most beautiful diving spots in the world. The coast is protected by a great barrier reef, which stretches along the coast and which is the second largest Barrier Reef after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Where to do an Open Water Diver (OWD) Certification in Playa del Carmen?

If you’re searching for a diving school in the Riviera Maya that offers classes in German, I highly recommend “Deep Dive” in Playa del Carmen.

They also provide classes in English and Spanish and organize diving trips to various locations in and around Playa del Carmen and Isla Cozumel. Additionally, they have seasonal programs like diving with whale sharks or bull sharks.

How to get an Open Water Diver (OWD) Certification?

If you’re planning to become a certified diver, there are several recognized institutions worldwide that offer the Open Water Diver (OWD) certification. The process typically begins with learning the theoretical basics, which you can conveniently complete at home through eLearning. I personally recommend SDI, as their online courses provide excellent flexibility and allow you to study at your own pace before arriving in Mexico.

The second step focuses on practical training, where you’ll get familiar with the diving equipment — usually in a pool setting under the guidance of an instructor.

Finally, you’ll complete your Open Water Dives in the sea. During these dives, you’ll repeat some of the exercises learned in the pool and experience the incredible feeling of floating almost weightlessly underwater. It’s the moment when theory turns into reality — discovering the vibrant marine life and the peaceful rhythm of the ocean for the first time.

Prerequisites & Duration of the OWD Certification

To start your Open Water Diver course, you need to be at least 10 years old, have basic swimming skills, and complete a short medical questionnaire confirming you’re fit to dive.

The full certification typically takes three to four days, depending on weather conditions and scheduling. This includes theory lessons, pool practice, and open‑water dives — giving you plenty of time to learn safely and enjoy your first real underwater adventure.

What to Expect During Your First Dive

Your first dive is an unforgettable moment — the instant you descend below the surface, everything slows down. You’ll feel almost weightless as you glide through the water, surrounded by colorful coral formations and curious fish. It’s peaceful, quiet, and surprisingly calming.

During your Open Water Dives, you’ll also practice a few essential underwater skills to build confidence and safety awareness. These include clearing your mask, recovering and replacing your regulator, checking your buoyancy, and communicating with hand signals. You’ll also learn how to ascend and descend safely, always keeping an eye on your dive buddy and instructor.

In Playa del Carmen, visibility is excellent and the water stays comfortably warm year‑round, making it ideal for beginners. Most instructors guide you step‑by‑step, ensuring you feel secure before exploring deeper areas. Once you take that first breath underwater, you’ll understand why so many divers describe it as life‑changing.

My experiences with "Deep Dive playa del Carmen"

Due to unexpected weather conditions, I was only able to complete the first two ocean dives. However, the Deep Dive Team went above and beyond to help me finish my certification on time. They quickly arranged transport to a Cenote in Tulum, where I could safely complete the remaining two dives.

Their flexibility and organization made the entire process stress‑free – from scheduling changes to equipment handling, everything was managed with professionalism and care. It’s rare to find a diving school that combines such great service, adaptability, and genuine passion for diving, and Deep Dive truly exceeded my expectations.

My experience with Deep Dive in Playa del Carmen was exceptional from start to finish. Diving in Playa del Carmen and Surroundings

Best Time to Dive

The best time to dive in Playa del Carmen and along the Riviera Maya is from November to May, when the sea is calm, visibility is excellent, and water temperatures hover around 26–29 °C. These months offer ideal conditions for both beginners and experienced divers, with fewer storms and clearer underwater views.

Marine Life

The Riviera Maya is home to an incredible variety of marine life. While diving, you can spot sea turtles, stingrays, colorful coral formations, and schools of tropical fish. Depending on the season and location, you might even encounter nurse sharks or bull sharks, especially around deeper dive sites near Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.

Cenote Diving

The region is world‑famous for its freshwater cenotes – natural sinkholes connected by underground rivers. Diving in a cenote is a completely different experience: the water is crystal‑clear, the light beams create magical reflections, and the atmosphere feels almost otherworldly. It’s a must‑try for anyone visiting the Riviera Maya, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced diver.
