Cancun, Mexico is a must-visit destination for those seeking sun, sand, and sea. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, Cancun has something for everyone.

Why you should visit Cancun

Let me set the tone for this article: When visiting Cancun and Playa del Carmen you are basically not in Mexico anymore. But in the US. This is not meant in regards to any border crossing or similar, but in regards to the culture, the (missing) Mexican flair and – especially – the prices.

Both cities are a popular spring break destination for many US-Americans. It is well-known, that here you will find many huge hotel chains and even more party locations. Already when approaching Cancun by plane, you can spot the iconic peninsula with the hotel strip and many all-inclusive resorts.

What to see and do in Cancun

Snorkeling with Whale Sharks

Cancun offers plenty of daytime activities, whether you’re chasing adventure or craving relaxation. You can visit Isla Mujeres, explore Cenotes, take a day trip to Tulum, or – depending on the season – go snorkeling with whale sharks.

If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, snorkeling with whale sharks is unforgettable.

A typical tour takes a full day. You’re picked up early in the morning and taken out by boat to search for these gentle giants. Once the crew spots them, you’ll get snorkeling gear, a wetsuit if needed, and then it’s your turn to jump in.Our guide ensured that no more than two people were in the water at once – something worth mentioning, because not all operators prioritize the animals’ well-being. After several snorkeling sessions and moments that felt almost unreal, we headed to a small island off the coast of Cancun for a fresh ceviche lunch and another swim in the crystal-clear, turquoise water. We booked with Eco Tours Adventure – Whale Shark Tours Cancun and were extremely happy with their service.

Partying in Cancun

Cancun is known as the party capital of Mexico for US-Americans – especially during Spring Break. If you want to avoid crowds, skip March entirely.

But if you do want to party, the rule is simple: what happens in Cancun, stays in Cancun.

The Boulevard Kukulcan in the Zona Hotelera is home to famous clubs like Mandala and CoCo Bongo. We decided to experience CoCo Bongo — and it was wild, theatrical, and unlike anything I’ve seen in Germany.

A small personal hint: Entrance prices start around $60 and can go up to over $1,000 depending on the package. Tickets usually include drinks and a live show. While the drinks aren’t great, the performances and atmosphere absolutely are.

Where to stay in Cancun

Cancun is not a budget-friendly destination, especially in the Zona Hotelera. This area is filled with well-known hotels like Fiesta Americana, Hard Rock Hotel, Hilton, and Hyatt.

During our 2022 visit, we stayed at Ocean Dream Cancun by Guru Hotel and were pleasantly surprised by the huge, clean rooms, great location, and – drumroll – the infinity pool with direct beach access. It’s only a 5-minute walk to CoCo Bongo, making it a fantastic option if you want to stay close to the action without paying luxury prices.

Best Time to Visit Cancun

The best time to visit Cancun is from December to April, when the weather is warm, dry, and outside hurricane season. Summer months are hotter, more humid, and more expensive.
