If you are looking for a family-friendly, yet adventurous hike, the crossing of the Sigmund Thun Klamm in Kaprun might be the right thing for you. The gorge inhabits a raging river, which can be watched from the comfort of a wooden walkway. It leads you through the 320 meters of the gorge and ends at the beautiful turquoise “Klammsee”. This hike is a (family) must-do, when in Kaprun or Zell am See.

Why you should hike the Siegmund Thun Klamm

The Siegmund-Thun-Klamm is a 320 meters long gorge, which can be found close to the city of “Kaprun”. A wooden footbridge leads the visitors through the whole gorge and ends up at the “Klammsee” – a small, picturesque lake at the end of the Klamm.

The gorge was formed by the whirling river of “Kapruner Ache” and carved into the rock. The gorge measures about 32 meters at its deepest point.

You can feel the strength of the raging river, while walking through the Klamm. Small waterfalls and swirls add to this rough appearance.

Walking through the gorge and experiencing the strength of the water as well as the results of thousands of years of blustering currents is an impressive thing to do and to see and should be on everyone’s list, when visiting Zell am See.

At the end of the Klamm you need to decide, if you want to turn around or continue your walk along the “Klammsee”.

If you decide to turn around, you need to consider, that you cannot go back through the Klamm as it is only walkable one way. If you want to go back to the parking lot / entrance of the Klamm, you need to take the way above the Klamm.

I would recommend extending the visit and to walk around the small lake as well. There is an educational trail for natural history.

The hike through the Klamm as well as the connecting visits of the lake and/or the Alm are child friendly. They are not too demanding, and they are a great and adventurous experience for children as well.

Extended Itinerary

If you want to hike even further, you can visit the “Almwirtschaft Schneckenreith” and enjoy a cold drink and a hearty meal.

How to plan your hike at through the Sigmund Thun Klamm

The Klamm is closed in Winter as the conditions get way too harsh. The season usually starts in May and ends at the end of October. The opening times differ according to the seasons. Inform yourself via the official website before visiting as it can also get closed spontaneously due to heavy rainfalls.

On Tuesdays in summer, the Klamm sometimes gets illuminated in the evening and gets glittered with colorful lights. This makes the Klamm even more magical and mystical.

Prices for a visit to the Klamm are 6,50 € for adults and 4,40€ for children between the age of 6 and 15 years.

You save some money if you have the “Zell am See Sommerkarte”.
